Yup, that’s right! Startup Weekend is here in Honolulu and the fun has begun…
For those of you who haven’t been following, Startup Weekend is a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. In just one weekend, your idea can go from concept to completion. The conference compresses 1 year of work in to 3-days (I’m not joking).
No time has been wasted. I simply checked in, grabbed something to eat and started networking. Opening the night, we played the game “half baked” and broke the ice with the packed room of attendees. Numbers were given out around the room and we quickly moved in to groups to begin creating our ideas based off of random words on the white board. My group, #2, took the words “rubber” and “mochi”. You’ll have to imagine the pitch we came up
So here’s the real deal… Anyone can pitch an idea but there’s a catch. You only get :60 seconds, so spit it out. Here’s what you gotta do to nail your pitch:
*What’s your name and project name?
*What’s the problem?
*What’s your solution?
*What do you need to make your idea reality? (a marketing guru, developer or cash $)
There were actually 27 pitches tonight, which is quite a lot. I spontaneously decided to pitch and raised my hand. I was quickly handed a #6. Thank goodness the gal with the :60 timer was so hard-nosed, it helped us swiftly move to the next phase of the process.
With all the pitches complete, I was now part of the process. Switching rooms, I was fed to the wolves. Everyone who pitched, as well as myself, raised their numbers and began clammering for votes. This frenzy continued for 15-minutes as everyone raced around voting for their top ideas. Out of the 27 ideas, it was narrowed down to the top 15. And for those that may be wondering… Yes, my idea did make it on the list!
Next phase… FIND A TEAM and GO GO GO!
Only 2 days to left.
See you at 9 AM tomorrow.
